PAID internships available for Cabrillo College students with maker-related skills!

As part of Cabrillo College’s 2017-2019 Makerspace Grant from the California Community College’s Chancellor’s Office, Cabrillo College students are eligible for partially or fully funded internships if they have sufficient maker-related skills in the following areas:

  • Rapid prototyping and iterative product design and fabrication using CNC machines, 3D scanners and printers, laser cutters, and vinyl cutters

  • Advanced manufacturing techniques

  • Skill in training others in the areas listed above

  • Other emerging technologies and processes requiring a combination of artistic/creative design and making skills, coupled with technical/engineering skills.

  • CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Manufacturing)

 

Internship Options for Cabrillo College Maker Interns

  1. Off-campus/at work site experience
    A traditional workplace internship experience in maker-related focus areas outlined above, at either a local business or non-profit

  2. Project-based internship completed in the Cabrillo College Makerspace for the internship provider
    Work will be done by a single student or small team of students (3-4) in the Cabrillo College Makerspace, with the internship provider providing evaluation and oversight, to include, perhaps, internship host training done on-site at the Cabrillo Makerspace

  3. Student with a developed makerspace project joins an entrepreneurial training program by the Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) or other economic development partner (such as through the Gig Economy Project Initiative).
    A sponsor from the entrepreneurial training program validates the development of a lean launch business plan. A clearly defined deliverable essential to the launch of the business venture is submitted as the end product. A minimum of 20 hours work is validated by the sponsor of the program, who also offers feedback on the student’s progress and product.

*All internships are eligible for CWEE (Cooperative Work Experience Education) credits.

 

Am I qualified for a maker-related internship?

There are a few ways to become qualified as a potential maker intern:

Take one or more (more is better) of the following core maker-related Cabrillo College courses in these STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) disciplines:

  • ART 95A, 95B, 196A, 196B

  • DM 1, 4, 34

  • ENGR 12, 25, 26

  • ETech 24, 41, 130, 140

Develop maker-related skills as a Cabrillo College student enrolled in the various Cabrillo College Extension-based Makerspace learning opportunities and workshops.

These are open to all members of the community, including Cabrillo College students.

Cabrillo College has partnered with an Employment Services Specialist and Job Developer to help us connect local industry and non-profits with Cabrillo College Makerspace student interns.

 

Internship length and funding

 

Internships must be a minimum of 20 hours, but could expand to 60 or more.

The Foundation for California Community Colleges (FCCC) has generously offered to pay for up to 20 hours of each internship. The Cabrillo College Foundation (CCF) has also generously agreed to subsidize additional internship hours. Additional hours beyond those subsidized by the FCCC and CCF might be paid by the internship host, or might be unpaid.
